Types of Mixers for Industrial Applications

Industrial mixers are machines that mix, emulsify, homogenize or otherwise blend materials into a single substance. Mixers thoroughly blend almost any solid or liquid needed to form the final product.

They are used in many industries during manufacturing or processing. Their powerful motors and blades allow the mixers to handle a wide variety of materials. These machines are used in many industries, including cosmetics, pharmaceutical, research and laboratory, chemical, agricultural, food and beverage, pulp and paper, automotive, water treatment, adhesives and sealant industries.

Vertical Mixers

Mounted on top of the motor so that they can stand upright. Vertical mixers are easy to diversify, which is why they can range from 1-gallon countertop styles to commercial styles of 25+ gallons.

Paddle Mixers

A paddle mixer is an agitator used to mix, blend and condition dry friable materials, sludge and slurries. It is made of large paddles that rotate around a horizontal axis of rotation.

Static Mixer

Static mixers use flat, thin, ribbon-like blades. Static mixers contain no moving parts, hence the name. Static mixers contain carefully designed clogs that powerfully mix materials together. Due to the simple arrangement of the blades, they are hygienic and easy to clean and maintain.

High Shear Mixers

In contrast to static mixers, high shear mixers operate at high speeds and are designed for particle size reduction, disintegration, dispersion, emulsification and homogenization of a wide variety of solid and liquid materials. This application is best suited for industries such as food preparation, paper, pulp and pharmaceuticals.

Food Mixers

Food processing mixers impart a specific effect or appearance to a product once it has been mixed with certain materials. They are typically used to whip, stir, knead, blend, mix or fold edible ingredients. Due to strict food and health regulations, these mixers must be highly sterilized.

Blenders

A blender machine is a mixer that has a sharp blade that runs at high speed. These are best suited for breaking down ingredients into smaller pieces.

Planetary blenders

A planetary blender is a mixer used for cooking or chemical mixing. It gets its name from the orbital pattern of mixing around the outer edge of the mixing bowl on an elliptical or circular shaft.

Homogenizer

Homogenizers are used to completely mix and break down materials. Some types of industrial homogenizers are used for any type of liquid or soluble material that requires advanced mixing of products, such as oils, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals and food products.

Emulsifiers

Emulsifiers are similar to homogenizers in that they are high-speed mixers that use porous screens to blend difficult-to-mix materials.

Agitators

Agitators are used to process low-viscosity substances, such as liquids. The mixing process is primarily a processing aid and acts as a secondary procedure throughout the process.

Batch mixers

Batch mixers are mainly used to mix materials with different mixing lengths. The mixer process is to blend a single load of material and then refill with the next material or batch.

Ribbon Mixers

Ribbon mixers are static, as they do not have any moving parts. The flat, thin blades instead act as stationary barricades that the material they mix must bypass. This process allows the materials to be mixed and blended together.

In-line mixers

In-line mixers are mixers that are placed in a pipe or in line with the material flow. The contents are mixed directly in the pipe, rather than in the tank. This allows them to process extremely large volumes of material while using very low horsepower. They also produce consistent batch turnaround rates.

Drum Mixers

Drum mixers are used to mix low to medium viscosity materials such as cement or adhesives. They are made from gallon drums that rotate to mix materials with widely varying particle sizes.

Portable Mixers

Portable mixers are mixers that can be moved from one location to another to provide much-needed mixing and blending that cannot be done off-site.
